A Broken Wing

Three days ago, we took in an injured owl. First, it was found on the driveway four days ago, but then no one could attend to it right away because we were on the way out. Then the day after we went on an search operation to find it and check the owl’s injury. Fortunately, we found it just a couple of meters away from the road, in a private property. The owl was resting on a low tree branch. So I ran back to the house to get a blanket and a box to capture it because the owl definitely needed help.

It wasn’t hard to capture the owl but it was of course afraid of us humans. So we took it in and examined its injured wing. It’s really hard for us to see how serious the injury is. As you can see on the picture below, you can see its bones! 😦 So, the first theory is that a bigger wild bird tried to eat this poor little thing. The second theory is that it was hit by a car.

Then, when we’re done giving it food and water we called the bird help hotline. But no one is answering! Apparently, they only operate during daytime. Good thing there is a guy from Bergen who knows someone who helps wild birds. Sent him the pictures and arranged a meeting with him the following day so the bird could get some medical attention.

When the guy saw the owl and the wing. He said that it’s the worst case he have ever seen. His theory about the owl’s injury is that the owl might have been hit by a car because owls tend to hunt for mice and the owls do this usually by waiting for the mice to cross the road. Unfortunately for the owl, it got hit by a car. Also, he thinks that the owl have been living with the injury for some days prior to the day we found it and started eating its own flesh because of hunger. 😦 So, most likely the veterinarian will euthanize it to end the suffering. It’s a sad ending for this beautiful creature but I’m glad I’m a part of saving it from a slow painful death.
