One of the most complex and demanding work task in my line of work as a healthcare personell is to take care and help patients who think that they are still physically and mentally fit. I understand that it is hard to lose the autonomy over self. As a healthcare worker, we know that we should always practice empathy and show them that we care even though the patient is for instance agitated. However sometimes there are things that has to be done or else leaving the patient alone would leave them more harm.
As a healthcare worker for more than a decade, I’m always in the process of learning different human behaviors and how to tackle different situations when patients try to do something that could harm them. What I’ve learned in the healthcare sector is that- no humans are the same despite the same type of diagnose. So ergo, we can’t always use the same approach to everyone.
There are also times that we (the healthcare workers) have to think for ourselves too. We get exhausted, tired and hungry and at work we don’t show it to our patients because we always have to act professional. It’s never easy but we’re doing our very best just to help the vulnerable despite the workload and payslip. However, sometimes I just want to toss the towel and walk out.
Just like these two double shifts that I had for two consecutive days. The patients that were assigned to me are really difficult. Both have cognitive issues. I was trained how to handle them but with their issues, there must be a lot going on in their heads so sometimes they listen and most of the time they do not. I learned to not take things personally but they went overboard a couple of times already. I got verbal attacks and so as physical. So, yeah, I felt like s****.
One of the worst experiences in life is when someone tries to the beat you when you’re just lending a hand to help them. I know that I’m not doing anything wrong but it left an emotional scar and has actually affected my immune system lately. Oh well, I need a break!
