In our itinerary, our first stop was Innvik Camping, located in the municipality of Stryn. We chose this campingsite because it was a perfect place to stop after a four-hour drive from Bergen. It also served as a convenient base, as the places we wanted to see and visit were only a short drive away. My partner booked a 4-person cabin for two days and two nights through the Campio app.
The next day, we decided to drive to Loen and take the cable car, the Loen Skylift up to Mount Hoven. Well, that was the plan until we saw the queue for the cable car. Instead of taking the Skylift that day, we decided to postpone it until the next day and spent the rest of the day sightseeing instead.
At the Loen Marina, you can rent a SUP or a kayak if you want to explore the fjord from the water.
After exploring Loen, we decided to drive to Olden and grab something to eat. Then, we went for a walk and explored the area.
When we were done in Olden, we drove to Melkevoll Bretun Camping to have a closer look at the Brikdalsbreen glacier and to check out some big rocks and mountain walls for climbing and bouldering. It’s about 20-minute drive from Olden. My partner had been there before, so he really wanted us to see how beautiful the place is.
After having some pizza at Melkevoll Bretun Camping, we drove further up to Briksdalsbre Fjellstove. Unfortunately, it was already closed, and it was getting late. My 7-year-old was tired, and so was I, so walking the remaining 3 kilometers to the glacier wasn’t really an option anymore.
Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see the glacier up close this time. I guess that just means we have a reason to come back!
The next day, we got up early to check out from Innvik Camping and to finally take the Skylift cable car in Loen. When we arrived at the Skylift parking area, it was already almost full, but thankfully, the queue wasn’t too long yet. So it really pays to get there early!
The cable car trip is approximately 7 minutes one way.
According to a legend, the mountain got its name from Odin’s eight-legged horse, Sleipner. I thought that was quite interesting to learn about while we were there. If you’re curious about the story, you can read more about the legend here.
We’re glad that many of the paths are pram friendly, which made it easier for us to explore with the baby.
Mount Hoven is also known for its adrenaline-filled activities, like paragliding, ziplining and the Via Ferrata. So, if you’re an adrenaline junkie, Loen might be the place for your next adventure. 😉
