Disclaimer: I’m not a professional photographernor paid to write for Olympus.
Olympus is one of the big camera brands in the market today that has been in the market since 1936 ( that is the year Olympus’ first camera was introduced according to Wikipedia).
Last month, I was fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity to test their mirrorless camera. I saw the Olympus ad on Facebook about their mirrorless cameras ( which are the EM1X and the E-M1 Mk2 ) that they are borrowing out to people who are interested in trying out Olympus cameras. So, I immediately filled up the form and since it’s Olympus, I didn’t have a huge expectation because for sure there are hundreds or thousands of people who would like to put Olympus cameras to the test. To my surprise one of their consultants emailed me and asked some information about me and what I usually take pictures of. He informed me that I could borrow a camera of my choice but the waiting time is long because there are lots of people who showed interest in the ad. I was also informed that this is also a project that he is working on (will do a seperate post about this).
I chose the EM1X and I asked for a telephoto lens. Unfortunately, I got late and I got the telezoom and a standard lens instead. I’m not complaining though.
Here are a couple of shots that I took using EM1X. Fixed the lighting on LR.
Our cat at home has been following me wherever I go. I noticed that she’s naggy today. Since I have day off today, I’m happy to play with her. She loves to play fetch with her favorite toy, earplugs. Then I got tired so I took a break and sat on the couch when she suddenly jumped to the table and stared at me for like 2 minutes. She looked like she was examining me (Probably wondering when I’m gonna toss her toy again.). So I tossed the earplug again, but this time she won’t go after it. She just remained on the table. Just as I started going back to my room, she followed me again but I just ignored her. I heard scratches from the door and because of that I yelled at her. I think she took the hint because she stopped scratching.
I felt bad because I yelled at her but I still remained in my room because I was busy doing some paper works. However she came back to my door which is unusual because she only do it once in a while and easily gives up. This time it’s different.
I let her in after a minute of whining. I talked to her in a very possible human way (I asked her what’s the matter with her). She stared at me, purred and she gave me a serious stare. Her eyes were talking to me. I could see it and I could feel her thoughts.
Then I started to wipe off the tears…
And that’s when I realized that there’s nothing wrong with Aki (the cat) today. It was me. I was lonely today and the cat knew before I did because I was busy overthinking about things around me.
One time, I heard a sound. A purring sound. I looked around and I found no cat. My ex and I never had one but we had a turtle. A red-eared slide turtle. It was my aunt who gave that turtle to me four years ago. Since no one and nothing was there I looked at it and I thought that I was just hearing stuff but then suddenly the turtle meowed again! The meow from the turtle is a soft meow. I was of course surprised and so I took my cellphone out of my pocket and turned the video recorder on and waited for the turtle to meow again. The turtle was staring at me and it looked like he was waiting for me to give him food.
I sat on the floor with my camera prepared to catch the extra ordinary moment of my turtle. The turtle gave me that Wtf are you doing mommy look. But it did not meow again nor made any sound so I got a bit upset because I have not taken any proof that the turtle meowed. However it did not stop me from telling my mom and my ex about it. My ex did not believe me of course (Who would believe when someone tells you that a turtle says meow? ).
Then I thought, maybe I was just exhausted and tired from work so I just told myself that I was just hearing things and my mind was just playing tricks on me.
But then, one day my ex came to me and said, “The turtle meowed.”. And I asked him if he was serious and he said he was so I got happy because it only means that I was not hearing things. I am not insane after all. 🙂
Sketching is one of my hobbies aside from internet surfing, chatting with friends and taking pictures. This is also one way of coping with stress. My love for drawing has begun when I was around 7 or 8 years old. I remember my drawings were stickmen, stickhouses and 2 dimensional animals. They weren’t so nice but I was satisfied with my masterpieces. Then one of my relatives commented that I wasn’t good at drawing and that I didn’t have the talent in drawing. I didn’t get angry. I got upset though (who wouldn’t be?). Thus I’ve lost interest in drawing.
I turned my attention to chess, darts and table tennis. I was good at those but for no reasons I just lost interest at them too. I was in the first years of highschool when anime became popular and I became a fan. I remember spending half of my school allowance for anime collectables (like cards and posters). I also hanged out with fellow anime fans at school who were really good at drawing. So that’s the time my love for drawing came back. My friends became my inspiration and they’ve motivated me. Also my sister has been a huge inspiration. She has a natural talent in drawing but she never brings me down whenever I feel like I’m not good at what I’m doing.
So yes I love to draw anime characters. As I’ve said earlier I’m an anime fan. One of my all time favorites is Yuyu Hakusho. So if someone is going to ask me to draw something right now, it would resemble Kurama (my first anime crush).
My drawings are mostly anime inspired but I also do portraits (of real person of course). I’ve learned the basics of sketching during my junior highschool year but then that was the only art class I had so I don’t remember so much of it anymore and I lack practice so my shading is less impressive or should I say bad.
Moving on, some people ask me for tips on how to draw or how to start drawing. They also asked about the rules. Well, I don’t follow rules. I don’t have any rules when it comes to drawing. I draw according to what I see and I don’t mind commiting mistakes because art is subjective. However I have a couple of tips that I hope will help. The first one is to find a motive that you like. What do you want to draw? Think about something that you really want not just because it is nice or easy to draw (remember: nothing is easy the first time, but if we’re motivated nothing is impossible!). Second, don’t be afraid to commit mistakes. It is normal to commit mistakes. Even professional artists commit mistakes! Third, don’t let others bring you down. And last, don’t give up!
