What alternative career paths have you considered or are interested in?
This is a response to one of the previous Daily Prompts on WordPress.
I’ve had quite a lot of dream jobs when I was growing up. I’ve always dreamed of working in the hospital as doctor/nurse, I’ve also dreamed of being a computer engineer, a nun (what? :P), business woman and got interested in working in the aviation as a flight attendant. The closest to the dream job that I somehow got is to work in the medical field. I’m a licensed radtech and radtechs mostly work in the hospital. Also, my sideline job as a caregiver is related to the job as a nurse.
Growing up, I had the opportunity to freely choose whatever careerpath that I wanted to take as long as it would generate a good income. One of my parents adviced me to not only follow my heart in choosing a course in college but also consider my future and my children’s future. So I took courses that I believed would help me but then I felt that it’s not for me so I just continued dreaming and actually led to course shift to another.
So I landed in the medical field which is still one of my dream to work in. After finishing the bachelor degree in radiography, I got to work in a hospital as a radiographer dose planer in the radiotheraphy department. Then after that, I got a job in Førde hospital as a X-ray and CT radiographer for a year and back in Bergen again because I just wanted to be home. However, it wasn’t that easy because of the very few job offers due to employment stop. I applied for jobs and been to interviews but got rejected afterwards because they prioritize radtechs who are already working in the hospital. However, instead of just waiting and hoping for new job listings in my field, I got a part time job as a caregiver and still continued to search for jobs and this time extended my search.
Fast forward, last year I got a mail from one of the airlines here in Norway about the job I was applying for as a flight attendant. They contacted me and informed me that they find my backround interesting and asked me to take a series of test. Psychological, mental and language test. Plus they asked me to send an ID photo to them. I did everything they asked me to do. I passed all the tests and got an invitation to the interview with dates to choose from. Then one day before the interview, I got a flu (speaking about luck!). I called them during the interview day and told them about my situation and rescheduled the interview. To make this story short, I’ve backed out because the salary is way too low. Yes the benefits are great-get to travel for free. But I need cash too for my expenses. I didn’t get sad because I found out that I can actually be one if I pushed through and besides I gained more confidence and I’d get to see and spend time with my little one everyday and nothing beats that.
